Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Workshop

Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention is a 2-day workshop designed for professionals and para-professionals.

Dates: Monday 19 & Tuesday 20 February 2024
Time: 8.30am to 4.30pm (registration from 8.15am)
Location: Koombana Room, Level 10, Bunbury Tower, 61 Victoria Street, Bunbury
Cost: FREE Coffee/tea and morning tea is provided.
Participants will need to bring/purchase their own lunch.
Participants are encouraged to bring along their own keep cup/coffee mug.

Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention is a 2-day workshop designed for professionals and para-professionals in the human services whose roles bring them into regular contact with people at risk of suicide.

 

This workshop aims to help participants:

• Gain an understanding of the problem of suicide
• Identify suicide risk
• Provide a framework for risk assessment and intervention
• Develop appropriate intervention skills
• Understand the limits to confidentiality
• Understand the importance of consultation
• Gain an understanding of self-harming behaviour
• Gain an understanding of the link between mental disorders and suicidal behaviours
• Understand the importance of postvention

We acknowledge that attending a workshop that discusses suicide may bring up difficult and distressing emotions for people, especially for those who have been personally or professionally impacted by suicide. Therefore, we ask that you consider whether this is an appropriate time for you to attend a session before registering. Informed by the latest research in suicide prevention, Wesley LifeForce has developed a quality suite of suicide prevention training. Our suicide prevention training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to increase awareness of suicide in Australia, identify the signs that someone may be at risk of suicide and appropriate action to take. Effective interventions can make a real difference and save lives. Our programs aim at training individuals from all walks of life, as well as organisational groups. All Wesley LifeForce facilitators are accredited trainers and have completed suicide intervention training.

This workshop is focused on how to support young people who may be at risk of suicide and is aimed at those working in roles which support young Australians. Please note that this training is for people aged 18+.

Outcomes
– understand risk and protective factors
– how to identify the warning signs that someone may be at risk of suicide
– how to ask directly about suicide intent
– understand what local and national support and resources are available to support a person at risk

Ensuring Participant Safety
Our workshop material is specifically designed keeping participant’s safety in mind. The course material is vetted by MindFrame, an Australian Government body which provides expert advice to the suicide prevention sector on responsible reporting/portrayal of the issue of suicide.

LEARN PRACTICAL FIRST AID SKILLS

  • Recognise common mental health problems in young people.
  • Provide initial help using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan
  • Seek appropriate professional help
  • Respond in a crisis situation

This is a 14-hour educational course, not a therapy or support group.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the treatments and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach a young person they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to help a young person to seek professional help or other supports.

Adults (18+) who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.

Saturdays 8 & 15 June, 2024
9.00am to 5.00pm

Zonta is offering women in our community the opportunity the complete this 12 hour accredited course. 

The Standard Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports.

 

 

 

Did you know? The LGBTQIA+ community are at an increased risk of suicide and self-harm. The 2020 roll out of the Private Lives 3 survey found that 41.9% of LGBTQIA+ participants had considered suicide within the last 12 months. This research also found that LGBTQIA+ young people are five times more likely to attempt suicide compared to the general population. 

Suicide Prevention Australia note that the LGBTQIA+ community are less likely to access help when experiencing a suicidal crisis and this is likely due to barriers faced by this group due to perceived and actual discrimination and stigma. 

In recognition of Trans Day of Visibility (31st March 2024) the St John of God Suicide Prevention Coordinators (funded by the Mental Health Commission) have teamed up with Living Proud to provide a free two hour workshop to the South West community on Suicide Prevention with an LGBTQIA+ focus. 

This workshop aims to increase your awareness of suicide prevention from an LGBTQIA+ lens and how you can provide support in this space.

Monday 29 July and Monday 5 August, 9.00am to 5.00pm (both days must be attended).

The 4-hour Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course is for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death. When we use the term ‘self-injury’ we are specifically excluding painful or damaging behaviours that are socially accepted or ‘sanctioned’ such as tattooing, piercing or other forms of body art, and cultural practices involving injury.

This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury. 

This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

Course Information:

4-hour (1/2 day) Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course.

Saturday 22 June, 1.00pm to 5.00pm.
